Solution: update to Ableton Live 12.
In Ableton Live 11, when using VST3 instruments and especially in conjunction with a controller such as Push or Roto-Control, program changes may be slow if the plug-in has many parameters but does not have a default Device Configuration. Ableton has addressed this in Live 12, so that the workaround below is no longer necessary.
Workaround for Live 11
With Live 11, the solution is to create a default Configuration, mapping 128 of the plug-in's parameters to Ableton's parameter list. You can do this manually, but as a shortcut:
- Load the plug-in in Live.
- The Device section at the bottom of the screen will show the X/Y pad. If necessary, click the triangle so that you can see the Configure button.
- Press the Configure button, so that it turns green.
If the plug-in UI is not already open, this will open it. - At the top of the multi/poly native window, select a new Performance.
Any Performance will do; just use the right arrow to increment by one.
This will automatically populate the Device Configuration with 128 parameters. - Right-click on the Device Title Bar to open the contextual menu, and select "Save as Default Configuration."
Selecting sounds should now be much faster.
